Frederic Edwin Church's architectural study combines ink line work with white gouache to document a colonial-era structure. The drawing captures the practical construction methods of Caribbean building: shingled roof forms, horizontal timber siding, and louvered ventilation typical of tropical climates. Church's precise rendering of materials and spatial relationships—the layered shingles, the recessed doorway, the open-air gallery—reflects nineteenth-century documentary practice. A sketched landscape element at left grounds the structure in its setting.
