Recollection of Scenery between Popayán and Pasto, Colombia

Frederic Edwin Church's pencil study captures the mountainous terrain of southwestern Colombia, rendered with the precise linework characteristic of nineteenth-century landscape documentation. Church traveled extensively through South America between 1853 and 1856, sketching directly from nature to gather material for finished paintings. These preliminary drawings reveal his method: economical line work establishing ridge lines, elevation changes, and atmospheric depth through linear perspective. Such field studies were essential to Hudson River School practice, providing authentic topographical detail while allowing the artist to work out compositional problems before committing to large-scale oil paintings in the studio.
