Study for Christ, Chancel of St. Bartholomew, New York

Francis Augustus Lathrop, American, 1849–1909 · 1893

Francis Augustus Lathrop's preparatory sketch for a monumental chancel work combines classical figure drawing with decorative restraint. The study demonstrates the artist's approach to religious commission work during the American Renaissance, when architectural ornament required integration with ecclesiastical space. Executed in watercolor and ink over pencil, the figure's frontal pose and flowing drapery reference Renaissance tradition while the loose handling reflects the spontaneity of working drawings. Lathrop, active in mural design and stained glass, contributed substantially to New York's late nineteenth-century church commissions, bridging academic training with American arts and crafts principles.
