Study of a Female Figure

This ink sketch by Francis Augustus Lathrop demonstrates the anatomical studies that informed American illustration at the turn of the twentieth century. Lathrop, a prominent designer and illustrator, used such rapid figure drawings to explore pose, musculature, and movement. The loose, gestural line work and economical rendering reflect the technical foundation underlying commercial illustration during the era when newspaper comics were beginning to establish their visual language—sequential panels, expressive figuration, and reproducible line-based imagery that would define the medium's grammar.
