Madonna and Child

Francis Augustus Lathrop, American, 1849–1909 · c. 1895

Francis Augustus Lathrop's watercolor study depicts the Virgin Mary holding Christ with attending angels in an arched composition. Rendered in soft washes of blue, red, and gold, the work exemplifies late nineteenth-century American religious art. Lathrop, a painter and designer trained in Europe, synthesized Renaissance iconography with contemporary technique. The arched format, hierarchical figural arrangement, and temperate palette reflect both historical devotional painting and the aesthetics of the American Renaissance movement, when classical and medieval sources shaped fine and decorative arts practice.
