Boy

Robert Frederick Blum, American, 1857–1903 · 1879

Robert Frederick Blum's sketch studies two figures—a profile portrait of a young boy wearing a cap and collared jacket, and a second figure in flowing drapery below. Executed in ink with confident linework, these rapid studies demonstrate the artist's observational technique during the formative period when American illustrators were developing the visual shorthand that would define sequential art. Blum, a prolific newspaper and magazine illustrator, worked during the 1870s–80s when daily and Sunday publications became the primary laboratory for visual storytelling, establishing the compositional and gestural vocabularies that emerging comic strips would inherit and systematize into panels, recurring characters, and narrative sequence.
