Duck Studies

Robert Frederick Blum's sketch sheet demonstrates the observational drawing that underpinned early comic illustration. The densely composed page shows multiple angles of ducks—heads in profile, full bodies in motion, anatomical details—rendered in quick pen strokes and selective ink wash. Such study sheets were essential practice for artists working in newspapers and periodicals during the 1870s-80s, when the demand for illustrated humor and narrative sequences was rapidly expanding.
