(top six panels), Frederick Burr Opper's tin-can-hatted tramp tries to deliver chickens to Suzanne, is chased by a squawking cat, wrestles with police, and ends up dragged into a patrol wagon — the eternal Hooligan loop of good intentions wrecked by chaos. Below, Ladies' Day at Batch's Club! follows a henpecked husband and his wife through a stuffed-shirt gentlemen's club, punchline arriving when she's ejected at the door. Opper's loose, rubbery line and interlocking speech balloons show the visual grammar already mature. Happy Hooligan (debuting 1900) was among the first recurring comic-strip characters to build audience loyalty across years — exactly the serialized, character-driven format that Sunday newspaper pages handed directly to the comic-book industry two decades later.
