Happy Hooligan — St. Louis Republic, November 20, 1904

This Sunday page from The St. Louis Republic Comic Section carries two strips on a single broadsheet leaf. The upper tier, "Dear Katy! Sweet Willie Jones!", runs twelve numbered panels tracking a Thanksgiving dinner conversation that escalates when young Willie is invited in — broad gestural figures, crowded speech balloons, the action reading left-to-right across three tiers. Below it, "Happy Hooligan's Thanksgiving Day Outing" follows Frederick Opper's tin-can-hatted tramp careening through a motoring misadventure and turkey theft that ends, inevitably, in arrest. Opper's loose ink line and rhythmic panel pacing — established from 1900 in Hearst papers — helped fix the Sunday page's grammar: recurring cast, episodic humiliation, punchline-final panel. These syndicated broadsheet pages, collected and reprinted through the 1930s, are the direct structural ancestor of the comic book format.
