Billy DeBeck's Barney Google arrives here as a full Sunday page syndicated through King Features — twelve panels tracking the bug-eyed, top-hatted Barney through a workplace accident farce: a cashier docks employees for an insurance fund, Barney promptly knocks himself cold, the office glee club rents an opera house to raise benefit money, and the strip closes with a "POW" that lands Barney unconscious again. DeBeck's line is loose and kinetic, speech balloons packed with vernacular slang, the slapstick rhythm timed across a grid that readers had to learn to scan left-to-right, top-to-bottom. Sunday pages like this one were the proto-comic book — the page format, recurring cast, cliffhanger gag structure, and visual shorthand for action (stars, crash lettering) that artists codified here before the stapled anthology existed as a form.
