Old Doc Yak Collects His Bill

· March 31, 1912

This Sunday comic strip follows Old Doc Yak, a rural veterinarian, through a chain of escalating mishaps as he attempts to collect payment for his services. The narrative unfolds across twelve panels using sequential art's emerging conventions: speech balloons convey dialogue, panel borders direct eye movement, and recurring characters establish continuity. The strip's physical comedy—the yak tumbling through water, Doc chasing livestock, collapsing in exhaustion—derives from silent film slapstick. By 1912, newspaper Sunday pages had become the dominant medium for comics, employing artists to develop visual vocabulary that would define the medium: expressive line work, dynamic posture, and cause-and-effect panel progression. Such strips established both the economic model and visual grammar upon which comic books would build.
