Freckles and His Friends

The narrative unfolds across twelve panels with sequential clarity: characters discuss their plan, venture into a cemetery at night, become frightened, and ultimately discover the "ghosts" are simply sheets on fence posts. The strip employs the visual conventions that defined newspaper comics—recurring child characters, speech balloons advancing plot and humor, varied panel sizes for pacing, and simple linework suited to mechanical reproduction. Such strips were the direct predecessors to comic books, establishing the grammar of sequential art that would define the medium for decades.
