Willi Franz
Willi Franz is an American comic book writer and occasional penciler, best known for his work on war stories for Charlton Comics from the late 1960s into the early 1970s. Born William Franz, he wrote under several variations of his name, including Will Franz and Willie Franz. His most notable creation is the ongoing feature "The Lonely War of Capt. Willy Schultz," a Vietnam War-era serial that follows a German American U.S. Army captain during World War II. The series stood apart from other combat comics of the time by centering on a conflicted hero torn between loyalties. Franz was active in the industry from 1969 through 1999, with credits as both writer and artist on 28 issues. His most frequently credited titles include *Fightin' Army*, *Army War Heroes*, *Attack*, *War*, *Capt. Willy Schultz*, and *The Iron Corporal*. While never a household name, Franz earned a dedicated following among war-comics readers for his nuanced storytelling and willingness to explore moral complexity within the genre. His later life and legacy remain closely tied to his Charlton work, which continues to be rediscovered by collectors and historians of Bronze Age comics.
