Walter Neugebauer
1921–1992
Walter Neugebauer was a pioneering Croatian comic book artist and animator, widely regarded as one of the founders of comics in his home country, alongside Andrija Maurović. He was born on 28 March 1921 in Croatia and died on 31 May 1992. Neugebauer’s path into comics began in the 1930s, and he eventually became best known for his work on the German series *Fix und Foxi* and its related titles, including *Rolf Kauka Classics*, *Die besten Geschichten aus Fix und Foxi*, *Tip Top*, and the *Lupo* line. His style blended lively cartooning with clear, energetic storytelling, making him a natural fit for the humorous animal adventures that defined those books. He often collaborated with writer and publisher Rolf Kauka, and his contributions helped shape the look and tone of Kauka’s popular characters. Neugebauer’s career spanned decades, with credited work on over 20 issues from 1935 into the 1990s. In later life, his legacy as a foundational figure in Croatian comics was cemented, though much of his most visible output was for the German market. He did not receive major international awards, but his influence endures in the history of European comic art and animation.
