Vernon Greene

Vernon Greene was a prolific cartoonist and illustrator best known for his work on the classic comic strip *Bringing Up Father*. He was born Vernon Van Atta Green on September 12, 1908, in Battle Ground, Washington, later adding an "e" to his surname for distinction. Growing up on a 650-acre ranch as one of seven children, he worked as a logger and blacksmith before attending Toledo University in the 1930s. Greene's career spanned from the 1940s to his death in 1965, during which he contributed as artist, colorist, inker, and letterer on numerous titles, including *Crime Classics*, *Shadow Comics*, *Four Color*, and *Intimate Love*. His style was clean and expressive, well-suited for both adventure and romance genres. He collaborated with various writers and artists across the industry, though he is most remembered for his steady, workmanlike hand on *Bringing Up Father*, a long-running strip about the misadventures of the McSwatt family. Greene passed away on June 5, 1965, leaving behind a body of work that reflects the golden age of American comic strips and comic books. While he did not receive major awards during his lifetime, his contributions remain respected among collectors and historians of the medium.
