T. S. Sullivant
Thomas Starling Sullivant, who signed his work T. S. Sullivant, was born November 4, 1854, in the United States and died August 7, 1926. He is best remembered for his distinctive animal and ethnic caricatures, which appeared most often in the pages of *Life* magazine. Sullivant also drew political cartoons, comic strip toppers, and illustrated children’s books. His style was a heavily cross-hatched pen-and-ink technique, marked by greatly exaggerated features that still showed a firm grounding in correct anatomy. His work has been collected in volumes such as *A Cockeyed Menagerie* and *La Ménagerie insolite*, and has appeared in *Nemo: The Classic Comics Library*. Sullivant’s career spanned from the late 19th century into the 1920s, and his unique blend of humor and draftsmanship influenced later generations of cartoonists.
