Sydney Jordan

Sydney Jordan was born in Dundee, Scotland, in 1928 and is best remembered for creating the daily science fiction strip *Jeff Hawke*, which he wrote and drew for the *Daily Express* from 1955 to 1974. After studying at the Dundee Institute of Art and Technology, he began his career in comics during the 1950s, contributing to British adventure titles. *Jeff Hawke* became his signature work, known for its literate scripts and meticulously detailed spacecraft and alien landscapes, blending hard science fiction with human drama. Jordan handled both art and writing on the strip, collaborating with no regular co-writer but relying on his own research and imagination. The strip’s thoughtful, cerebral approach set it apart from more action-oriented contemporaries. After *Jeff Hawke* ended, Jordan continued working in comics, contributing to European and British publications, and his later work included strips for *Agent X9* and other anthology series. He remained active into the 2020s, with credits spanning from 1959 to 2024. Jordan received the UK Comic Art Award for Best British Comic Strip in 1992. His legacy rests on *Jeff Hawke*, which remains admired for its intelligent storytelling and pioneering role in British sci-fi comics.
