Suat Yalaz was a Turkish comic book artist and writer, best known as the creator of the historical adventure hero Karaoğlan. He was born on 1 January 1932 in Turkey and passed away on 2 March 2020. Yalaz began his career in the 1950s, drawing for magazines and newspapers before launching Karaoğlan in 1962. The strip, set in medieval Central Asia, became a national phenomenon and spawned a series of films that Yalaz also directed and produced. His style blended dynamic action with detailed, atmospheric linework, and he often worked as his own writer, inker, and letterer. In the 1970s and 1980s, Yalaz contributed to European comics, including titles like *Den vesle vampyren*, *Kébir*, *Anna*, *Satarella*, *Chacal*, and *Sadissimo*, where his credits spanned art, coloring, and writing. His collaborations included work with European publishers, though he remained most closely associated with his own creation. Later in life, Yalaz was recognized as a pioneer of Turkish comics, and his legacy endures through Karaoğlan’s continued popularity in reprints and adaptations. He received several Turkish cultural awards for his contributions to the medium.
