Studio Vandersteen
Willy Vandersteen was born on 15 February 1913 in Belgium and died on 28 August 1990. Over a fifty-year career, he built a prolific studio that produced more than 1,000 comic albums across over 25 series, selling over 200 million copies worldwide. He is regarded, alongside Marc Sleen, as a founding father of Flemish comics. Hergé called him "the Brueghel of the comic strip," and his studio's mass production and commercialization earned him the nickname "the Walt Disney of the Low Countries."
Vandersteen is best known for *Suske en Wiske* (published in English as *Spike and Suzy*, *Luke and Lucy*, *Willy and Wanda*, or *Bob and Bobette*), which sold 3.5 million books in 2008 alone. His other major series include *De Rode Ridder*, with over 200 albums, and *Bessy*, which saw nearly 1,000 albums published in Germany. His signature style blended clear-line storytelling with a warm, humorous touch, and he worked closely with a studio of artists to maintain his vast output. He is credited as artist, writer, colorist, inker, and letterer on 126 issues in our catalog, most notably for *Suske en Wiske*, *Finn & Fiffi*, and *Jerom*.
Vandersteen's work remains most popular in Belgium, the Netherlands, and Germany. His legacy endures through the continued publication of his series and his influence on European comics. He received numerous honors, including being named a Knight of the Order of the Crown in Belgium.
