Steffen Kverneland
1963–
Steffen Kverneland was born on 14 January 1963 in Haugesund, Norway, and later settled in Oslo in 1987. He is best known for adapting classical literature into comics, a path he began with *De knyttede never* (1993), based on a novel by Øvre Richter Frich, and continued with the four-volume series *Amputerte klassikere*. His most celebrated work is *Munch*, a graphic biography of painter Edvard Munch, which won the Brage Prize for non-fiction in 2013 and has been translated into French, Dutch, German, Polish, Danish, and Korean with support from Norla. Kverneland’s style blends meticulous research with expressive, often darkly humorous linework, and he frequently collaborates with writers and artists on projects ranging from *Rådvill Barsken* to *Fidus* and *James Bond* adaptations. Over a career spanning from 1989 to 2023, he has been credited as artist, colorist, inker, letterer, and writer on 39 issues, with *Munch* and *Amputerte Klassikere* among his most prominent titles. His later work continues to explore literary and historical subjects, cementing his reputation as a distinctive voice in Norwegian comics.
