Spain Rodriguez
Manuel Rodriguez, known professionally as Spain or Spain Rodriguez, was born on March 2, 1940, and died on November 28, 2012. An American underground cartoonist, he is best remembered as the creator of the character Trashman, a satirical, working-class hero who first appeared in his own comic series and later in *Zap Comix*. Spain’s path into comics was shaped by his blue-collar upbringing in Buffalo, New York, and his early years as a biker and mechanic, experiences that infused his work with a gritty, rebellious energy. His signature style combined bold, expressionistic linework with a raw, politically charged storytelling that often tackled themes of class struggle and anti-authoritarianism. He was a key figure in the underground comix movement, collaborating with fellow artists like Robert Crumb and contributing to the landmark anthology *Zap Comix*. Beyond Trashman, Spain co-created the graphic biography *Che: A Graphic Biography*, a detailed visual account of Che Guevara’s life. Later in his career, he continued to produce work that reflected his lifelong commitment to leftist politics and counterculture. Spain’s legacy endures as a pioneer of underground comix, and he was posthumously recognized with an induction into the Will Eisner Comic Awards Hall of Fame.
