Samuel Langhorne Clemens, far better known by his pen name Mark Twain, was born on November 30, 1835, in Florida, Missouri, and died on April 21, 1910, in Redding, Connecticut. Though primarily celebrated as a novelist and humorist, his work has been adapted into comic form, most notably through *Classics Illustrated* and its international editions, where his stories *A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court* and *The Prince and the Pauper* found new audiences. Raised in Hannibal, Missouri, the setting for his most famous works, Clemens began his career as a printer's apprentice and typesetter before becoming a Mississippi riverboat pilot. After an unsuccessful stint as a miner in Nevada, he turned to journalism for the *Territorial Enterprise* in Virginia City. His breakthrough came with the 1865 story "The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County," which brought him international fame. Clemens's signature style blended sharp wit, satire, and a keen eye for American life, as seen in *The Adventures of Tom Sawyer* and its sequel *Adventures of Huckleberry Finn*, often called the "Great American Novel." He also co-wrote *The Gilded Age* with Charles Dudley Warner. Later in life, Clemens became a vocal anti-imperialist, serving as vice president of the American Anti-Imperialist League. Though his investments, like the Paige Compositor, drained his finances, his legacy as a foundational American writer endures. His works remain in print and adapted across media, including the comics credited to him in our catalog from 1946 to 1978.
