Rudolf Petersson
1896–1970
Rudolf Petersson (17 June 1896 – 17 April 1970) is best remembered as the creator of *91:an*, one of Sweden’s most enduring and beloved comic strips. Born in Sweden, Petersson’s path to comics was shaped by his own military service with the I 16 regiment in Halmstad, Halland, from 1916 to 1918. It was there he encountered the real-life inspirations for his main character, Mandel Karlsson: a blond, ill-tempered Smålandian who softened at the sound of an accordion, and a friendly, short-haired soldier. By blending and swapping their traits, Petersson gave life to both 91:an and the supporting character 87:an Axelsson. Many of the strip’s officers were also drawn from officers he knew during his service. Petersson worked as artist, writer, inker, colorist, and letterer on the series, with his credited work spanning from 1934 to 1967. His most frequent titles include *91 Karlsson* (often published as a Christmas album), *91:an*, and the Norwegian version *Nr. 91 Stomperud*. His straightforward, observational humor and grounded character designs gave the strip a lasting warmth. Petersson passed away on 17 April 1970, leaving behind a comic that remains a cornerstone of Swedish popular culture.
