Roman Dirge
Roman Dirge was born Roman Elliot on April 29, 1972, in the United States. Before entering comics, he worked as a magician, an experience that would later inform the macabre whimsy of his best-known creation, *Lenore, the Cute Little Dead Girl*. Dirge’s path into the industry began in the late 1990s, and he quickly established himself as a singular voice in alternative horror-comedy. As writer, artist, colorist, inker, and letterer, he brought a distinctive gothic-cute style to his work, blending spindly, expressive linework with a palette that favored stark blacks and sickly pastels. His signature series, *Lenore*, follows a zombie-like Victorian girl whose adventures mix slapstick violence with deadpan, often surreal humor. Dirge’s key collaborators were largely himself, as he maintained tight creative control over his projects. Beyond *Lenore*, he produced the one-shot *The Cat with a Really Big Head* and the children’s book *The Monsters in My Tummy*. His work has been collected in volumes such as *The Bloody Best of Lenore* and seasonal specials like *Lenore Halloween-special* and *Lenore: The Time War*. Dirge remained active in comics through 2025, continuing to expand his cult-favorite universe. His legacy lies in pioneering a blend of cute and grotesque that influenced a generation of indie cartoonists.
