Roberta Gregory
Roberta Gregory was born on May 7, 1953, in the United States. She is best known as the creator of the character Bitchy Bitch, the caustic, put-upon everywoman who starred in her long-running Fantagraphics series *Naughty Bits*. A prolific contributor to the underground comix movement, Gregory’s work appeared regularly in foundational feminist and LGBTQ+ anthologies such as *Wimmen’s Comix* and *Gay Comix*. She entered the comics scene in the mid-1970s, and over three decades—from 1976 to 2006—she was credited as writer, artist, letterer, colorist, and inker on more than seventy issues. Beyond *Naughty Bits*, her signature titles include *Bitchy Bitch*, *Artistic Licentiousness*, *Kid Anarchy*, *Head*, and *Crap*. Her style is marked by raw, expressive linework and a sharp, satirical voice that dissected gender politics and daily absurdities with unflinching humor. Gregory’s later years saw her continue to influence alternative comics, and her work has been recognized with multiple awards, including several Ignatz Awards and a Harvey Award. She remains a vital figure in the history of feminist and independent cartooning.
