Richard Comely
1950–
Richard Comely (born October 9, 1950) is a Canadian comics creator best known as the writer, artist, and publisher behind the patriotic superhero **Captain Canuck**. He launched the series in 1975, handling pencils, inks, letters, and colors, making it one of the earliest homegrown Canadian superhero comics of the modern era. Comely’s clean, energetic linework and all-ages storytelling defined the character’s early adventures, and he continued to produce new material for the franchise through the 2010s. His most credited titles include *Captain Canuck*, *Captain Canuck Reborn*, *Chapterhouse Archives: Captain Canuck*, *Star Rider and the Peace Machine*, and the *Captain Canuck First Summer Special*. In 2011, Minds Eye Entertainment acquired film rights to the character, and the following year Comely entered an exclusive licensing agreement with Chapterhouse Comics CEO Fadi Hakim to develop animation, merchandise, and a new comic series under Captain Canuck Incorporated. Comely’s work helped lay the groundwork for a distinct Canadian comics industry, and he remains active as a creator and rights-holder.
