Renzo Calegari
Renzo Calegari was an Italian comics artist best known for his rugged, atmospheric work on Western and war stories. Born on 5 September 1933 in Italy, he began his comics career in the late 1950s, contributing to popular digest-sized series that thrived on tight, action-packed storytelling. Over a career spanning from 1958 into the 2020s, Calegari was credited as artist or inker on 75 issues, with his most frequent work appearing in titles such as *Western*, *War Picture Library*, *Collana Rodeo*, *Thriller Picture Library*, *Seriemagasinet*, and *Ken Parker*. His style—marked by strong chiaroscuro, expressive faces, and a keen sense of landscape—made him a natural fit for the gritty realism of the Italian *fumetti* adventure tradition. He collaborated extensively with writer Gian Luigi Gonano on the long-running *Ken Parker* series, a landmark Western that blended historical detail with psychological depth. Calegari’s contributions helped define the visual identity of that celebrated series. He died on 5 November 2017, leaving behind a body of work that remains admired by fans of European adventure comics.
