René Windig
René Windig was born in 1951 in Amsterdam, Netherlands, and is best known as a Dutch cartoonist and the longtime creative partner of Eddie de Jong. Together, they co-created the newspaper comic *Heinz*, a long-running strip centered on a grumpy, sarcastic cat whose deadpan humor earned a devoted readership. Windig contributed as artist, colorist, inker, letterer, and writer across more than 130 issues from 1980 to 2013, with his most credited titles including *Metro*, *Wordt Vervolgd*, and several *Heinz* collections such as *Heinz van H tot Z* and *Niet zeuren, Heinz!*. The duo also designed album covers for the rock band Rockin' Belly. In 1991, Windig and de Jong received the Stripschapprijs, the Dutch equivalent of a lifetime achievement award in comics, honoring their sustained impact on the medium. Windig’s style is clean and expressive, favoring deadpan facial expressions and economical linework that let the humor breathe. His work remains a touchstone of Dutch newspaper comics, and his partnership with de Jong stands as one of the most consistent and beloved collaborations in the field.
