Raymond Macherot

Raymond Macherot was born on 30 March 1924 in Belgium and passed away on 26 September 2008. Though he never achieved the broad public recognition of compatriots like Hergé or André Franquin, he earned lasting respect among critics and collectors for his sharp, warmly crafted funny animal comics.

Macherot entered the Belgian comics scene in the early 1950s, and by 1953 he was contributing work that would span decades across publications including Kuifje, Pep, and Tim. He wore many hats throughout his career — artist, writer, colorist, inker, and letterer — demonstrating an unusually hands-on command of the medium across some 160 credited issues.

His most enduring contributions are the satirical funny animal series Chlorophylle and Sibylline, both of which blend gentle humor with pointed social observation. Sibylline in particular became a touchstone title, and Macherot's association with it extended well into later years, reflecting the series' sustained appeal. His work also appeared in Isabelle and the Swedish-language Klorofylls äventyr, suggesting a readership that reached beyond the Franco-Belgian market.

Macherot's legacy rests on the distinctive wit and draftsmanship he brought to a corner of European comics that rewarded careful attention — work that holds up not through spectacle, but through intelligence and craft.
