Rachel Hartman was born on July 9, 1972, in Kentucky. She is best known as the author of the young adult fantasy novel *Seraphina* and its sequels, but her career in comics preceded her prose fiction. Hartman worked as an artist, inker, letterer, and writer on approximately thirteen comic issues between 1996 and 2000. Her most credited titles include *Amy Unbounded*, *The Ashcan Series*, and the *Galaxion/Amy Unbounded Flip Book*, as well as *The Log Baby*. Her comic work often featured a gentle, whimsical line and a focus on character-driven storytelling, qualities she later brought to her novels. Hartman’s notable co-creations include the character Amy, a young girl in a medieval-inspired fantasy world, which she developed in her *Amy Unbounded* series. After moving into prose, she gained wider recognition for her Seraphina series, which blends dragons, music, and court intrigue. She continues to write young adult fiction, with recent titles including *Tess of the Road*, *In the Serpent’s Wake*, and the forthcoming *Among Ghosts*. Hartman’s legacy bridges independent comics and acclaimed YA literature; she has received honors including a Michael L. Printz Honor for *Seraphina*.
