Philip Mendoza
1898–1973
Montague Philip Mendoza was born in London on 14 October 1898. After serving as a private in the British Army from 1914 to 1920, he established himself as a popular poster designer, particularly noted for his whimsical illustrations of anthropomorphized mice. He transitioned to comic art in 1951, becoming a prolific artist for British publishers. Over a career spanning from 1948 to 1971, Mendoza contributed to numerous titles, including *Thriller Comics*, *Thriller Comics Library*, *Captain Vigour*, *Mighty Atom*, *Paul Temple*, and *Super Detective Library*. His style, honed in poster work, brought a lively, detailed quality to adventure and detective strips. He collaborated with writers and editors on these series, helping define the look of post-war British comics. Mendoza passed away in 1973.
