Paul Cuvelier
1923–1978
Paul Cuvelier was a Belgian comics artist born on 22 November 1923, best remembered as the creator of the adventure series *Corentin*, which debuted in the very first issue of *Tintin* magazine in 1946. He passed away on 5 July 1978. Cuvelier’s path into comics began with a classical fine-arts background, which gave his work a distinctive, elegant line and a painterly sense of composition. His signature style blended clean, expressive draftsmanship with a subtle, atmospheric use of color, setting him apart from many of his contemporaries. Over a career spanning from 1950 into the 1970s, he contributed to titles such as *Kuifje*, *Collectie Jong Europa*, and *Favorietenreeks*, often serving as artist, colorist, inker, letterer, and writer. Among his notable later works is *Epoxy*, a collaboration that showcased his mature, stylized approach. Cuvelier’s legacy lies in his refined visual storytelling and his role in shaping the early adventure comics of the Franco-Belgian tradition, though he never received major industry awards during his lifetime. He remains a respected figure among connoisseurs of classic European comics.
