Paco Roca
1969–
Francisco Martínez Roca, known professionally as Paco Roca, was born in 1969 in Valencia, Spain. He began his career in comics while also working as an advertising illustrator, and over time became one of Spain’s most respected graphic novelists. Roca is best known for *Wrinkles* (original Spanish title *Arrugas*), a tender, insightful story about aging and memory that was adapted into an animated film by Perro Verde Films, directed by Ignacio Ferreras and released in 2011. His work often explores memory, family, and history with a quiet, observational style. Among his most acclaimed graphic novels are *La Casa*, *Der Winter des Zeichners*, *Der Mann im Pyjama*, and *Der Abgrund des Vergessens*. Roca typically writes, draws, inks, colors, and letters his own books, giving them a unified personal voice. His collaborators have included publishers and translators who helped bring his work to international audiences, particularly in France and Germany. He has received several major awards, including multiple Eisner Award nominations and Spain’s National Comic Award. Roca remains active, with credits spanning from 2004 to 2025, and is widely regarded as a central figure in the modern Spanish graphic novel renaissance.
