Nicole Claveloux
Nicole Claveloux, born 23 June 1940, is a French painter, illustrator, and comic artist whose work bridges fine art and the fantastical. She is best known for her lush, dreamlike illustrations and her contributions to the European comics scene, particularly through her collaborations with writer Georges Rivière. Claveloux’s path into comics began in the 1970s, a period when she brought a distinctly painterly sensibility to the medium, often working in vivid color and intricate linework. Her signature style blends surrealism with a delicate, almost botanical precision, creating worlds that feel both whimsical and unsettling.
Among her notable co-creations is the series *La Main Verte*, as well as the *Grabot!* stories, including *Keine Moneten für Grabot!* and *Hau ab, Grabot!*. She also contributed to the German edition of *Heavy Metal* (titled *Schwermetall*) and the album *Morte-Saison*. Her work often appeared in anthologies and standalone albums, with her self-titled collection *Nicole Claveloux* serving as a showcase of her range. Active from 1975 to 2019, she maintained a consistent presence in the European comics landscape. Later in life, she continued to paint and illustrate, her legacy cemented as a singular voice in French comics. While major awards are not widely documented for her, her influence endures among admirers of visionary, art-driven storytelling.
