Mike Gold, born Itzhok Isaak Granich on April 12, 1893, in New York City, was a Jewish-American writer whose work defined proletarian literature in the United States. A lifelong communist, Gold wrote across genres as a novelist, journalist, editor, playwright, and critic. His semi-autobiographical 1930 novel *Jews Without Money* became a bestseller and cemented his reputation as the leading voice of working-class fiction during the 1930s and 1940s. He died on May 14, 1967.

In comics, Gold is credited as a writer on 87 issues from 1977 to 2022, with his most frequent credits on *American Flagg!*, *E-Man*, *Starslayer*, *Warp*, *La Sombra*, and *Harley Quinn*. His work often carried a sharp, socially conscious edge, reflecting his lifelong political convictions. He collaborated with artists like Howard Chaykin and John Byrne, and co-created the series *Warp* and *La Sombra*. Gold’s later legacy is that of a bridge between radical literary traditions and the emerging direct-market comic scene. He received no major industry awards, but his influence persists in the gritty, politically engaged storytelling of his best-known titles.
