Michel Weyland
1947–
Michel Weyland was born on 19 August 1947 in Belgium. He is best known as the creator of the fantasy-adventure series *Aria*, which he both wrote and illustrated, and which ran for decades. Weyland entered comics in the early 1980s, contributing to the magazine *Nouveau Tintin* before launching his signature work. His style is characterized by clean, classical ligne claire linework and detailed, romantic fantasy settings, often featuring strong female protagonists. He collaborated primarily with himself as a writer-artist, though his work appeared in the German-language series *Edition phantastische Abenteuer*. Weyland’s most notable co-creation is the character Aria, a red-haired heroine whose adventures blended mythology, magic, and adventure. He also created the series *Ariane*, a spin-off. Over his career, he was credited on 102 issues across multiple series, working as artist, colorist, inker, letterer, and writer. Weyland continued producing new stories into the 2020s, with his last credited work appearing in 2023. He received no major awards widely recorded in English-language sources, but his long-running *Aria* series remains a cult favorite among European fantasy-comics readers.
