Michel Rabagliati
b. 1961
Michel Rabagliati was born on 7 September 1961 in Montreal, Quebec, where he remains based. He is best known for his semi-autobiographical series following the life of his protagonist, Paul, which includes *Paul Has a Summer Job*, *Paul Moves Out*, *Paul Goes Fishing*, and *The Song of Roland*. Rabagliati began drawing comics in his forties, after a career as a graphic designer, and his clean ligne claire style shows the influence of European masters like Hergé, *Asterix*, and *Spirou et Fantasio*. He published early work with Drawn & Quarterly before moving to Conundrum Press in English and La Pastèque in French. In 2006, *Paul Moves Out* won the Doug Wright Award for Best Book, and in 2010 he received the Joe Shuster Award for Outstanding Cartoonist for *Paul à Québec*. That book was adapted into a 2015 theatrical film, with Rabagliati co-writing the screenplay. After a hiatus announced in 2016, he revealed in 2017 that he was working on a more autobiographical and somber installment, depicting Paul in his fifties. Rabagliati has also spoken openly about living with cyclothymia and sleep apnea. His work, collected in titles like *Paul at Home* and *Paul in the Country*, has been a steady presence in Canadian comics from 1999 into the 2020s.
