Michael DeForge

Michael DeForge (born 1987 in Canada) is a comics artist and illustrator best known for his surreal, meticulously detailed work on series such as *Lose*, *Ant Colony*, *Big Kids*, *Birds of Maine*, *Familiar Face*, and *First Year Healthy*. He entered the field in the late 2000s, quickly distinguishing himself with a singular style—dense, hallucinatory linework and off-kilter compositions that blend the grotesque with the whimsical. DeForge often serves as his own writer, artist, colorist, inker, and letterer, giving his books a unified, idiosyncratic voice. His collaborations with other creators are less frequent but notable; he has worked with editors and publishers who champion alternative and experimental comics. Among his key co-creations is the acclaimed *Ant Colony*, a darkly comic fable about insects that explores themes of community and decay. Later in his career, DeForge expanded into longer-form narratives like *Big Kids* and *Birds of Maine*, cementing his reputation as a distinctive voice in North American indie comics.
