Matt Fox
1906–1988
Matt Fox (1906–1988) was an American illustrator and comic book artist best known for his macabre, atmospheric covers and interior work for horror and science-fiction titles in the mid-20th century. Born in 1906, he entered the comics field during its Golden Age, eventually becoming a regular contributor to publisher I.W. Publishing (later known as Super Comics). Fox’s most recognized work appeared on series such as *Chilling Tales*, *Eclipso*, *Amazing Stories of Suspense*, *Astounding Stories*, and *Cuentos de Brujas*. He also contributed to *Basil Wolverton's Gateway to Horror*, where his detailed, shadowy style complemented the eerie tone. Fox often collaborated with writers and editors who specialized in genre material, though he worked primarily as a solo artist. His signature approach combined meticulous linework with a moody, Gothic sensibility, making his covers stand out on newsstands. Despite a career that spanned from the 1950s into the 2020s—with 20 credited issues in the database—Fox remained a relatively quiet figure in the industry. He died in 1988, leaving behind a body of work that continues to be admired by collectors of vintage horror and science-fiction comics. No major awards were recorded during his lifetime, but his art remains a touchstone for fans of pre-Code and Bronze Age genre storytelling.
