Matsuri Akino

Matsuri Akino is a Japanese manga artist best known for blending fantasy, mystery, and horror in her work, most notably as the creator of the long-running series *Pet Shop of Horrors*. Born on July 7 in Tokyo, she grew up in Mitaka and now resides in Yokohama. Akino’s path into comics began in the 1980s, and she gained widespread recognition for *Pet Shop of Horrors*, which debuted in 1995 and spawned a sequel, *Pet Shop of Horrors: Tokyo*, as well as the detective series *Kamen Tantei*. Her art style combines delicate, detailed linework with a gothic sensibility, often featuring eerie creatures and elegant character designs. A playful touch in her public persona is her self-portrait as a kappa, sometimes shown with braids or an odango hairstyle. Among her key collaborators are writer and editor teams at various Japanese publishers, though she is primarily known as a solo creator. Her work has been translated internationally, and she has received acclaim for her atmospheric storytelling. Akino remains active in the industry, with her catalog spanning over a decade of English-language releases from 2003 to 2011. She has been honored with several awards in Japan, including the prestigious Kodansha Manga Award.
