Mark Smylie
1967–
Mark Smylie, born in 1967, is an American comic book writer and illustrator best known for his epic fantasy series *Artesia*. His work on the property spanned nearly a decade, from 1999 to 2006, during which he served as writer, artist, colorist, inker, and letterer across 27 issues. The core *Artesia* narrative unfolded through the titles *Artesia*, *Artesia Afield*, *Artesia Afire*, *Artesia Besieged*, and the *Artesia Annual*, with an additional contribution to the anthology *Dawn 1/2: Dreams of Dawn*. Smylie’s style is marked by dense, mythic world-building and detailed, painterly illustration, blending European fantasy influences with a gritty, historical sensibility. His signature creation, the warrior-priestess Artesia, became a cult figure in independent comics, and he is credited as the sole creator of the series’ universe, characters, and lore. After concluding the comic, Smylie transitioned to prose fiction and role-playing game design, expanding the *Artesia* setting. He has not received major mainstream comic awards but remains respected in fantasy and small-press circles for his singular, self-contained vision.
