Marco Polo (c. 1254 – 8 January 1324) was a Venetian merchant, explorer, and writer whose account of his travels along the Silk Road gave Europeans their first detailed look at the cultures of Asia. Born in Venice, he learned the mercantile trade from his father Niccolò and uncle Maffeo, who had already journeyed to meet Kublai Khan. In 1271, the three Polos embarked on an epic expedition, reaching the Mongol ruler’s court and spending 17 years in his service. Marco was appointed a foreign emissary, traveling through China, Myanmar, India, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, and Vietnam. He recorded observations of porcelain, gunpowder, paper money, and exotic plants and animals—all previously unknown to Europeans. After escorting a Mongol princess to Persia, the Polos returned to Venice in 1295. Captured during a war with Genoa, Marco dictated his stories to cellmate Rustichello da Pisa, producing *The Travels of Marco Polo* (c. 1300). Released in 1299, he became a wealthy merchant, married, and had three children. He died in 1324 and was buried at San Lorenzo in Venice. His book inspired later explorers, including Christopher Columbus. In modern comics, Polo is credited as writer on 13 issues of *Illustrerade Klassiker* and similar Classics Illustrated series (1946–2023).
