Marcelo D'Salete
1979–
Marcelo D'Salete, born in 1979, is a Brazilian comic book artist, writer, and educator. He earned a master's degree in art history from the University of São Paulo and studied graphic design at Carlos de Campos College, working as an illustrator for publishers before breaking into comics in 2001 with contributions to the magazines *Quadreca* and *Front*. His first graphic novel, *Noite Luz*, appeared in 2008, followed by *Encruzilhada* in 2011. D'Salete is best known for his deeply researched works on Afro-Brazilian history and resistance to slavery, particularly *Run for It: Stories of Slaves Who Fought for Their Freedom* (2014) and *Angola Janga: Kingdom of Runaway Slaves* (2017), the latter an epic account of the Palmares quilombo that required eleven years of research and creation. His style combines stark, expressive black-and-white art with a documentary-like narrative focus. In our catalog, he is credited as artist, inker, and writer on eleven issues from 2014 to 2019, with titles including *Cumbe* and multiple editions of *Angola Janga*. D'Salete continues to teach and create, and his work has earned him acclaim for bringing marginalized histories to the comics medium.
