Marcel Ruijters
Marcel Ruijters, born 3 July 1966, is a Dutch cartoonist and graphic novelist best known for his meticulous, historically informed graphic narratives. He won the prestigious Stripschapprijs in 2015, the highest lifetime achievement award for comic artists in the Netherlands.
Ruijters’ path into comics was rooted in a deep fascination with art history and architecture, which he studied before turning to sequential art. His signature style blends crisp, detailed linework with a restrained, almost documentary-like palette, often evoking the look of medieval woodcuts or early modern engravings. He is a singular artist, typically handling writing, art, coloring, and lettering himself.
His most celebrated works include *Hieronymus Bosch*, a graphic biography of the Dutch painter; *Eeuwig 1913*, a historical epic set in the year before World War I; and the science-fiction series *Zone 5300*. He also created *Dr. Molotow*, *De tweelingparadox*, and *Alles hangt samen*. Ruijters often collaborates with colorist and fellow Dutch creator Joost Swarte, and his work has been published by Oog & Blik and Scratch Books.
Ruijters continues to produce new work, with a catalog spanning from 1994 to 2025. His legacy is that of a meticulous craftsman who brings forgotten corners of European history and art to vivid, thoughtful life on the page.
