Mandryka

Nikita Mandryka was a French comics artist best known for his absurdist, surreal creation *Le Concombre Masqué* (The Masked Cucumber). Born on 20 October 1940, he began his career drawing for the youth magazine *Vaillant* before moving to *Pilote* in 1967. In 1972, he co-founded the seminal adult-oriented magazine *L'Écho des savanes* alongside Claire Bretécher and Marcel Gotlib, a key venue for the countercultural comics of the era. He left that publication in 1979 to return to *Pilote* as its editorial director. Mandryka’s signature work, the long-running *Le Concombre Masqué* stories, blended slapstick, philosophical whimsy, and a distinctive, loose line. He was a central figure in the French bande dessinée scene, collaborating with Gotlib and Bretécher, and his influence extended through his editorial roles. In 1994, he received the Grand Prix de la ville d'Angoulême, the highest honor in French comics, recognizing his lifetime contribution to the medium. Mandryka died on 13 June 2021, leaving a legacy as a playful, iconoclastic pioneer of the adult comic magazine movement.
