Makoto Yukimura

Makoto Yukimura, born May 8, 1976, in Japan, is a manga artist celebrated for two landmark series: the hard science-fiction work *Planetes* and the epic historical saga *Vinland Saga*. He entered the comics field after studying at the Tokyo University of the Arts, initially working as an assistant to other manga creators before launching his own career. His breakthrough came with *Planetes* (1999–2004), a thoughtful, character-driven story about space debris collectors that earned acclaim for its realistic depiction of orbital mechanics and human drama. This led to *Vinland Saga* (2005–present), a sprawling narrative set in 11th-century Europe, blending Viking history, philosophical themes, and visceral action. Yukimura is known for his meticulous research, expressive linework, and ability to balance intimate character moments with large-scale conflict. Key collaborators include editor Tatsuya Yoshida and translator Stephen Paul. Notable co-creations include the anime adaptations of both series. Later in his career, Yukimura has continued *Vinland Saga*, which has won multiple awards, including the 2009 Kodansha Manga Award for Best General Manga and the 2012 Japan Media Arts Festival Excellence Prize. His work has influenced a generation of manga and anime fans, solidifying his reputation as a thoughtful storyteller who explores human resilience and the search for peace.
