Lyman Young
1893–1984
Lyman W. Young was an American cartoonist best known for creating the adventure strip *Tim Tyler's Luck*. He was born on October 20, 1893, and died on February 12, 1984. His younger brother, Chic Young, created *Blondie*. Encouraged by their mother, a painter, both brothers pursued art. After studying at the Chicago Art Institute and serving in World War I, Young worked as a salesman before entering comics in 1924. He took over C. W. Kahles’ strip *The Kelly Kids*, then in 1927 launched *The Kid Sister*, a spin-off. His signature work, *Tim Tyler's Luck*, debuted in 1928 and ran for decades, often drawn with clean, lively lines suited to its globe-trotting adventures. Young wrote, inked, and drew the strip, which was adapted into serials and comics worldwide, including Italian editions like *Cino e Franco* and *Tim Tyler Cowboy*. His collaborators included his brother Chic and later artists who continued the strip. *Tim Tyler's Luck* co-created a lasting archetype of the plucky young hero. In later life, Young remained active in syndication until retiring in the 1970s. His legacy endures through the strip’s international reach and his influence on adventure comics.
