Louis Forton was a pioneering French cartoonist and writer, best known for creating two of the country's most enduring comic strips: *Les Pieds nickelés* (1908) and *Bibi Fricotin* (1928). Born on March 14, 1879, in Sées, Orne, he began his career in the early 20th century, a formative period for French bande dessinée. His most famous work, *Les Pieds nickelés*, introduced the mischievous trio Croquignol, Filochard, and Ribouldingue, whose satirical adventures lampooned society and authority. The strip's anarchic humor and lively linework made it a staple of the weekly *L'Épatant*. Forton's style was clean, expressive, and built for quick, gag-driven storytelling, influencing generations of European cartoonists. In 1928, he launched *Bibi Fricotin*, a series about a resourceful young boy, which continued after his death by Gaston Callaud. Forton passed away on February 15, 1934, in Saint-Germain-en-Laye. His work has been reprinted extensively, with his catalog spanning 68 credited issues from 1908 through 2021, including collections like *Les Pieds Nickelés, la collection* and *Pieds Nickelés, les nouvelles aventures des*. While major formal awards were less common in his era, Forton is remembered as a foundational figure in French comics, his characters still recognized as cultural touchstones.
