Lew Wallace was an American author, soldier, and diplomat, best known for his 1880 novel *Ben-Hur: A Tale of the Christ*, a historical adventure story that became one of the most influential Christian books of the 19th century. Born on April 10, 1827, in Indiana, Wallace served as a Union general during the Civil War, participating in major battles like Shiloh and Fort Donelson, and later presided over the trial of Andersonville prison commandant Henry Wirz. After the war, he served as governor of New Mexico Territory and as U.S. minister to the Ottoman Empire. His path into comics came posthumously, as his work was adapted into the *Classics Illustrated* series and other comic book formats from 1951 onward, including titles like *Stjerneklassiker* and *Four Color*. Wallace’s signature style blended historical detail with moral and religious themes, and his key collaborators in comics were the adaptors and artists of these classic series. His co-creations include the enduring character of Judah Ben-Hur, whose story has been adapted into multiple films and stage productions. Wallace died on February 15, 1905, at his home in Crawfordsville, Indiana. While he did not receive major comics awards, his literary legacy earned him a lasting place in popular culture through these adaptations.
