Kurt Caesar
Kurt Caesar, born Kurt Kaiser on 30 March 1906 in Montigny-lès-Metz, Alsace-Lorraine, was a German-Italian artist whose career spanned painting, journalism, and comics. He initially studied engineering in Leipzig before switching to the Academy of Fine Arts in Berlin, all while maintaining a boxing career that earned him a German title. In 1929, he became a correspondent for a Zurich magazine, traveling across Europe and Asia. After marrying, he settled in Italy and began drawing comics for *Il Vittorioso*, most notably the nationalist character *Romano il Legionario*. He also contributed to *Donald Duck and Other Adventures* with strips like "Aeroporto Z" and "Will Sparrow."
During World War II, Caesar served as an interpreter for Erwin Rommel in Africa. Captured by the British, he returned to Italy after the war. In 1952, he became the primary cover artist for the science-fiction magazine *I Romanzi di Urania*, producing around 170 covers until 1958. He later worked on Mondadori's *I Gialli* and *Segretissimo* series, as well as Italian sci-fi magazines *Oltre il Cielo* and *Cronache del Futuro*, and the German *Perry Rhodan*. Caesar died of a heart attack on 12 July 1974 at his home in Bracciano.
